Night Duty, Counted Correctly
Sister worked eleven nights last month, two of them covering for somebody who fell ill. The allowance for those two is the thing that gets missed, and she will notice on the fifth.
The roster is the timesheet
Night duty, shift allowances and the extra hours are already on the duty record. Payroll reads that record. The spreadsheet on the side, the one only the accounts assistant fully understands, stops being necessary.

Locums and visiting consultants
Paid by session, on the same run as the salaried staff instead of by a separate cheque somebody remembers to write.
Overtime
Hours beyond the shift, at your rate, taken from attendance rather than from a claim written a fortnight later.
Statutory deductions
Applied, with payslips and a monthly register that survives the question asked in March.
Paid, and provable
A payslip per person and a register per month. When somebody leaves and asks for last year’s figures, the answer is on a screen rather than in the memory of whoever was doing accounts at the time.
It is not your compliance officer
Rates, eligibility and what has to be filed for an establishment of your size are your accountant’s call. The calculation follows what you set and keeps the register. It does not tell you what the rule is, and anybody claiming otherwise is overselling. We would rather say so now.
Frequently asked questions
Do consultants on a share of collections go in?
Not as an automatic calculation. Salaries, night duty and allowances are worked out from attendance. A consultant paid on a share is usually settled separately, which is better admitted than half-built.
Can payslips go out by email?
Yes, or be printed. Doctors tend to want the email and the ward staff tend to want the paper, and both work off the same run.
What if a nurse swaps a night?
The swap is recorded on the roster when it happens, and payroll reads the roster. The allowance follows whoever actually did the night.
Can accounts run payroll without seeing patient data?
Yes. Access is by role. The person running the payroll does not need the patient records, and ought not to have them.
