Doctors’ sessions are not shifts
A consultant who sits Tuesday and Friday evenings is on the same rota but behaves differently. The front desk books against those hours, so an appointment cannot be handed out for a Wednesday he is never in the building.
It does not build the rota for you
Who can do nights, who cannot be put with whom, who has been on nights three weeks running. The in-charge knows all of it and the software knows none of it. A rota built by a program that does not know your ward is a rota somebody rewrites by hand on Sunday evening. What it does is put the week, the leave and the gaps in front of her while she decides.
Frequently asked questions
Can nurses see their shifts on a phone?
Yes, and that alone removes most of the calls to the in-charge. A rota on a notice board is only readable by whoever is standing in front of the notice board.
Does the front desk see doctors’ timings?
Yes, and it books against them. Appointments given for hours a doctor is not in are one of the commonest front desk complaints, and they come from timings living in one person’s head.
Can we plan a month ahead?
Yes, though most hospitals work a week or a fortnight out. Plan as far ahead as your leave requests are reliable, and no further than that.
What about on-call duty?
On-call is set as its own duty on the rota with the person named. Whether it is paid differently is a payroll setting, and payroll reads this same rota.
