What the gate records
Name and phone number
Typed once, at the gate, on a phone or the desk computer. Legible, which the notebook often is not.
Which tenant, which room
The visit is against the person being visited, so it shows up on her record and not only in the day’s log.
In at, out at
Marked when they leave. A visitor still shown inside at eleven at night is a question worth asking.
The evening a parent asks
A mother rings to ask whether her daughter’s cousin came on Saturday, because the girl said he did. Search the tenant, read the visits. Two minutes, and no argument about what the watchman remembers.
It is a register, not a security system
Nothing here opens a gate, reads a face or stops anybody walking in. The watchman does that, standing where he stands today, and he is better at it than any screen. What changes is only this. His register becomes searchable by tenant, by date and by phone number, on the evening somebody needs it and cannot wait while forty pages are turned.
Frequently asked questions
Can the watchman enter this on a phone?
Yes. It runs in a browser, so an ordinary Android phone at the gate is enough. Nothing is installed.
Can we see every visitor a tenant had this month?
Yes, on her record. Parents ask for it more often than you would expect, and so occasionally does a police station.
What about delivery boys and the milk man?
Most PGs don’t log them, and the register would be useless if they did. Log the visitors who come inside the building, and leave the gate to the watchman.
Can we look up a visitor by phone number?
Yes, and it is the search that matters when a man has come twice and nobody at the gate can place him.
